In our district, we use the IDEA Proficiency Test (IPT) to assess basic language proficiency skills, as well as identification, placement, re-designation, student progress and program evaluation.
• The test focusses on:
o Oral- syntax, morphological structure, lexical items, phonological structure o Writing- vocabulary, vocabulary in context, reading for understanding, reading for life skills, language usage, and writing conventions
• This test is built on sound current developmental, learning and language acquisition theories. This assessment tool has been recently updated and normed.
• We use PM Benchmarks to obtain reading information.
If the assessments determine that the student’s use of English is sufficiently different and is identified as requiring specialized services to adjust to the linguistic and cultural environment in order to achieve and be successful an AIP is developed and a program is created.
An ANNUAL INSTRUCTION PLAN (AIP) is designed to meet the needs of the student
it focusses on student’s needs in the four areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing
it provides adaptations and strategies for instruction and in the classroom
